Bartók and Brahms: chamber music
clarinet Bruno Bonansea | violin Marieke Blankestijn | piano Emanuel Ax and Lahav Shani
Bartók Six Romanian Dances for Violin and Piano | Bartók Contrasts for Clarinet, Violin and Piano | Brahms Haydn Variations for two Pianos
Carting a phonograph around, Bartók travelled through the Balkans recording the folk music of his native soil. The surging rhythms and pure melodies that he collected turned up later in his compositions: virtually unchanged in the Romanian Dances, adapted in his own manner in Contrasts. Brahms would have loved it: in the Haydn Variations he also moulded and shaped the melody in his own unique style.
