Sibelius: the late symphonies
conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste
Sibelius Symphony No. 5 | Sibelius Symphony No. 6 | Sibelius Symphony No. 7
In his later symphonies Sibelius turned his gaze skywards. The Fifth rises with the powerful wingbeats of a flight of swans, the Sixth is redolent – in the composer’s words – of ‘the fragrance of the first snow’, and the Seventh ignites a blanket of stars. Each of the symphonies individually is a marvel of the poetry of nature, but only when combined as a triptych do they reveal their deepest secrets.
