Please note: this is a modified program to replace Gergiev and the Leningrad Symphony. The original program consisted of Madame en Noir (Momotenko), Suite from 'The Nose' (Shostakovich) and Seventh Symphony 'Leningrad' (Shostakovich). Instead, the program below will be played.
conductor Valery Gergiev
Momotenko Madame and Noir (world premiere)
Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Suite
Shostakovich First Symphony
The miniature Madame and Noir by Momotenko centers on a mysterious lady in black, spotted during the nightly card game in Saint Petersburg. The same city witnessed the premiere in 1926 of the precocious graduation work that launched the young Shostakovich's career: his grimly witty First Symphony.
