It was undoubtedly the greatest crisis in the history of St Petersburg: the siege of Leningrad, which lasted almost two and a half years and claimed the lives of over a million citizens. With his Leningrad Symphony, Shostakovich erected a monument to his beloved and threatened city. That same city forms the ironic backdrop to Gogol’s short story The Nose, on which Shostakovich based his eponymous avant-garde opera.
