The manuscripts from the archives of St. Petersburg represent the unique singing culture of the Russian North (Novgorod, Solovki, Tikhvin, Vologda). Samples of all Russian singing styles from the second half of the 17th century can be heard during this concert. This time is interesting because in the practice of singers the Old Russian monody of the early Middle Ages, the old dissonant polyphony of the 16th century and the new harmonic music coexisted organically.
The Ex Libris Ensemble has been performing these unique pieces for more than 25 years, not only in concert programs. The singers of the ensemble were among the first in Russia to return these treasures to liturgical practice. The fact that most of these chants were once written down on paper from the Netherlands makes the program all the more interesting.
