Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music | Rijnvos Europe (commission, world première) | Beethoven Symphony No. 9

Light in the days before Christmas is brought to us by the Serenade to Music, Vaughan Williams’ paean to the peaceful harmony that music can give. In the spirit of the Ode to Joy from Beethoven's Ninth, it is a musical vision of a better world. The audience at the première, on the eve of the Second World War, was moved to tears; who knows what emotions the new Europe of Richard Rijnvos will unleash in this concert.
