Bach St Matthew Passion

‘Leipzig, around the time of the Matthew Passion première’, replied Bach specialist John Butt when the Guardian asked him where he would go if he had a time machine. ‘It would be fantastic.’ What the conductor didn't tell us is that for a long time he has been creating such a machine in his music-making. Each of his performances of Bach’s St Matthew Passion takes the listener back in time to the Leipzig of 1727. ‘Mastery’, according to Trouw.
