Sibelius Festival: The symphonies I
conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste | violin Pekka Kuusisto
Sibelius Finlandia | Sibelius Humoresques | Sibelius Symphony No. 1
Sibelius became a national hero around 1900 thanks to the patriotic tone poem Finlandia. With its desolate wind solos and majestic climaxes, the First Symphony, which dates from the same period, sounds as immense as the Finnish landscape. Even in the six humoresques the Finnish melancholy is evident, although there is also plenty of room for dry humour.
