Haydn Trumpet Concerto | Haydn Symphony No. 104 | Stravinsky Le sacre du printemps
In Haydn’s view, a bit of a shake-up at the right time does no harm. To keeping the nodding London concert audiences on their toes, he peppered his late symphonies with strategically placed drum strokes – a sensation in those days. Nowadays our ears are somewhat more accustomed to such sounds, including the shockwaves of Stravinsky’s Sacre du Printemps. Haydn no longer makes us jump, but he will always remain a pioneer.
