During the thirty years that Valery Gergiev has been performing in Rotterdam there have been not only countless Russian highlights but also unforgettable Mahler evenings. This concert adds to that number Mahler’s monumental Sixth, an ode to his wife Alma, and a symphony in which fate takes a hand, with a huge hammer blow. The symphony is played by the Mariinsky Orchestra – one of the world’s top 20, according to Gramophone.
