With his Fifth Symphony Shostakovich gave a response to state criticism of his ‘vulgar’ opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Valery Gergiev conducts an orchestra of young musicians of the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and Codarts Rotterdam.
