Schumann came across Schubert’s forgotten Great Symphony while leafing through a pile of unpublished manuscripts. ‘Other-worldly,’ was his comment on the second movement. ‘Everyone holds their breath, while a celestial being wanders among the orchestra.’ As if Schubert had shown him the way, Schumann himself began to write for the orchestra soon afterwards, with the intimate Cello Concerto being one of his finest works.
