Though they were totally different, Sibelius had a profound admiration for Schumann’s ‘inexhaustible feeling for poetry’. That feeling of Schumann’s can be heard in the unrivalled intimacy of his Piano Concerto; Sibelius’s own poetry is more rugged, rooted in the Finnish countryside. A fine example is the finale of his Fifth, in which the music rises with the majesty of the beating wings of a wedge of swans: unforgettable.
