Very little music is as evocative as that of Shostakovich, especially his Eleventh. In bright colours the Symphony depicts the failed revolution of 1905. The bleak morning of the revolt, the heat of the battle and the despondency that followed – the listener is confronted with all of them, as if in a film. It is preceded by the radiant Cello Concerto of Salonen – ‘At once thrilling and immersive’, according to the Chicago Sun Times.
