Yannick Nézet-Séguin (born Montréal, 1975) has been chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra since 2008. He took his first piano lessons at the age of five. At Montréal Conservatoire he studied piano, composition, chamber music and conducting. At the same time he studied choral conducting at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. After completing his studies he continued his training with a number of leading conductors, including Carlo Maria Giulini.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin was appointed as artistic director and principal conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal in 2000 – a position which he still holds. In the same year he conducted his first opera production. Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s European debut in 2004 with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse accelerated his career path. He made his debut with seven orchestras that season, which all immediately invited him to return.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin made his debut with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005, and was appointed chief conductor of the orchestra with effect from the 2008/2009 season. Yannick Nézet-Séguin is also Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra (from 2012/2013) and former Principal Guest Conductor with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He has led all the world’s great orchestras as a guest conductor, and has conducted for opera productions in the most prestigious theatres.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin has taken part in a host of successful tours with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, with performances in London, Paris, Vienna, New York, Toronto, Tokyo and Beijing. He has also commenced a series of widely praised CDs with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, including an international award-winning recording of orchestral works by Maurice Ravel for EMI Classics, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 6 ‘Pathétique’ for Deutsche Grammophon. His versatility and that of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra have also come together on projects ranging from operas to family performances and from subscription concerts to community projects.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin has made a tour to Germany, Poland and France in 2014 with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Other international concerts were given during the festivals of Santander, San Sebastian, Edinburgh and Grafenegg. The residency at the Théâtre des Champs-Elyséesi Paris was continued. February 2015 he conducted the orchestra in a very successful tour of the United States.
