Anja van der Maten

Role in the orchestra:
I play the second oboe in the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, but I also like to play the first oboe in other orchestra’s. When I tell people I play the oboe in such a beautiful and big orchestra, I always get questions because everyone knows someone who plays an instrument. The best conversations are the ones in which people get genuinely interested in the music and therefore come to one of the concerts.
I love how music can remind me of people. For example, when I hear Aus Liebe from the Matthäus-Passion, I always think of the way our previous solo flutist used to play that part. The opening measures are so beautiful, after every time I play it I look forward to the next time.
The orchestra is:
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra is driven and fierce.
