I play the contrabass, an instrument which functions as the foundation of the orchestra. It provides rhythm, resonance and the character of the orchestra. My first concert at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra was in September 1984, when we played the Scheherazade from Rimsy-Korsakov. It made a big impression on me how the quality of the orchestra developed from the rehearsals to the actual concert. The concert itself felt like a rollercoaster.
My fondest memory from the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra is when we played Wagners Bühnenweihfestspiel Parsifal at the London Proms with Simone Rattle. That was a very intense experience. The audience liked the concert so much that they stood at the podium during the whole five hours, which was very special.
In my free time I like to play baroque and classical music on authentic instruments. But I also like to run and to cook, I especially like baking cakes.
