Music in Motion

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam have joined forces for a new video project: Music in motion. Scapino choreographer Ed Wubbe and RPhO innovator Mike Schäperclaus came up with a corona proof concept for fourteen dancers and thirty eight musicians with music by Edvard Grieg.

After a short rehearsal period in the studios of Scapino, the production, which lasts 2:41 min, will be recorded in two days in the main hall of Theater Rotterdam Schouwburg. The premiere is Friday, June 5 at 4.30 pm, simultaneously on the YouTube channels of Scapino and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

In this era of corona in which live performances with the audience are not possible, both institutions share the strong need to continue creating and to surprise the audience with dance and music. This production creatively shows, without physical contact, a dialogue between dancers and musicians. The need for contact and being together, especially now that this is not possible, is made tangible and visible. The entire production was filmed from the point of view of a dancer or musician, so that there is constant eye contact. On Edvard Grieg's driving In the Hall of the Mountain King, the video is a powerful human statement.
