The American soprano Jessye Norman died on Monday 30 September at the age of 74. In March 1973 she made her Dutch debut with our orchestra in Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust under the direction of Jean Fournet. That unforgettable performance was the start of a series of beautiful concerts with her, including Richard Strauss orchestral songs during the BBC Proms and in Carnegie Hall, Berlioz 'Les nuits d'été' and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. Jessye Norman has not been a guest of ours for the last decades, but we remember her voice and overwhelming musicality.

Listen below to Der Einsame im Herbst from Das Lied von der Erde in her performance with our orchestra led by Edo de Waart (radio recording, 1992).
