Kavakos plays Mendelssohn

Available on demand from Saturday 20 November 12:00 pm (CET)

conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada
violin Leonidas Kavakos
| Mendelssohn Violin Concerto
Beethoven Symphony No. 4

'Kavakos plays like a god,' wrote Het Parool about his CD with Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. “Technically superior to everything and everyone and musically overwhelming with poetry, rich in song and with a delicate, slender tone with a silvery aura, which arouses emotion especially in the slow movement.” Since that recording from 2009 the master violinist has only been looking for even greater height increased. Just listen.

Goerne & Shani: songs

Available on demand from Saturday 20 November 12:00 pm (CET)

baritone Matthias Goerne
piano Lahav Shani
| Songs of Mahler,
Schubert & Shostakovich

Unforgettable, enchanting, beautiful: when Matthias Goerne sang Mahler for the first time in 2019 with our orchestra conducted by Lahav Shani, NRC ran out of superlatives. Goerne and Shani meet again, this time in the intimate setting of only voice and piano. Mahler and Shostakovich take turns in this magnificent recital: a whole life passes by in a sublime hour.

Bach meets Schoenberg

Available on demand from Saturday 20 November 12:00 pm (CET)

conductor François-Xavier Roth | Schoenberg Chamber Symphony No. 2
Bach Orchestral Suite No. 1 (BWV 1066)

“There is no greater perfection in music than with Bach,” said Schoenberg. You can recognize this love for Bach in the Second Chamber Symphony, especially in the dancing second movement. This is Schoenberg at his most accessible: expressive, colorful and – quite atypically – completely tonal. A forgotten masterpiece that finds ideal companionship in Bach's First Orchestral Suite, and a dream advocate in the phenomenal François-Xavier Roth.

Fantastique

Available on demand from Friday 3 December 8:15 pm (CET)

conductor Lahav Shani
piano Seong-Jin Cho
| Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1
Berlioz Symphonie fantastique

Seong-Jin Cho plays Tchaikovsky's majestic First Piano Concert. Berlioz pulls out all the orchestral registers in his Symphonie fantastique with equal sovereignty, until all hell breaks loose in the final movement with bronze chimes. A spectacular concert evening that sounds like clockwork.

This concert was originally going to be played by Yuja Wang. However, due to entry restrictions from the US, this was not possible for her.

and is then available on demand

conductor Jonathan Cohen
soprano Emoke Barath
countertenor Andreas Scholl
tenor Andrew Staples
baritone Matthew Rose

| Handel Messiah

After exactly fifty years, the Messiah can finally be heard again, played by the Rotterdam Philharmonic. “A performance that left a deep impression,” De Telegraaf said at the time, “although one can discuss whether the denominations were all justified.” No denominations this time: with Baroque specialist Jonathan Cohen and the best voices of the time, Handel's masterpiece comes into its own. Full glory to sound. Hallelujah!

Chamber music by Brahms

This concert would be available on demand from Saturday 22 January at 12.00 pm (CET) but will be postponed to a TBA date for technical reasons

piano Lahav Shani
violin Leonidas Kavakos
viola Roman Spitzer
cello Emanuele Silvestri
| Brahms Piano Quartet No. 1

Leonidas Kavakos has warm feelings for Brahms' chamber music: "Brahms can let the drama run high, and then come up with something of perfect simplicity from one moment to the next. A lullaby, a caress, so tender that you can only smile." Add a dash of unbridled zest for life, and you have all the ingredients of Brahms' First Piano Quartet.

Jukka-Pekka Saraste conducts Sibelius

Available on demand from Saturday 5 February 12.00 pm (CET)

conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste
soprano Helena Juntunen
baritone Tommi Hakala
choir YL Male Voice Choir
| Sibelius Kullervo

The hero Kullervo plays a leading role in the ancient Kalevala epic. His story of courage and fate inspired Sibelius to create a grand symphony, performed here with the best conductor, soloists and choristers imaginable (the eighty-piece YL Men's Choir!). If you want to know where Tolkien got the idea for The Lord of the Rings (or just want to get carried away), don't miss this concert.

conductor Lahav Shani
piano Martha Argerich
| Pijper Symphony No. 2
Ravel
Piano Concerto in G
Stravinsky
Suite L'oiseau de feu

Just for the sublime Martha Argerich with her body piece, Ravel's beautiful Piano Concerto, you would keep your agenda free. But then there is also Stravinsky's sparkling Suite L'oiseau de feu and Pijper's Second Symphony: a symphony that rivals Ravel, Stravinsky and Mahler. Compact in playing time, completely overwhelming in orchestral line-up – a unique piece.

Lahav Shani conducts Mahler 1

Available on demand from Saturday 5 March 12.00 pm (CET)

conductor Lahav Shani
cello Nicolas Altstaedt
| Bloch Schelomo
Mahler Symphony No. 1

Mahler was 24 years old when he started sketching his First Symphony: music with such a wealth of images – from stillness to nature to klezmer eruptions – that it is hard to believe that this was his symphonic debut. It was with this score that Lahav Shani, also at the age of 24, made his international breakthrough as a conductor. His mastery, already astonishing then, has only deepened ever since. Just as impressive is Nicolas Altstaedt, who opens this concert program as a soloist with Schelomo. Music of exuberant color richness and fierce drama.
