Yannick Nézet-Séguin joined our orchestra as chief conductor in 2008. Our musicians were unanimous in their choice for the then unknown young Canadian. He clicked instantly with them. There was an immediate mutual feeling of warmth and passion.
Now, ten years later, Yannick is leaving as chief conductor, but not before we have performed at some prestigious summer festivals and in concert halls in Europe. In our summer tour, Yannick and our musicians will travel to Santander and San Sebastián in Spain, and then on to Essen and Cologne in Germany. They’ll play at the BBC Proms in London, after which the tour will continue in Lucerne (Switzerland), and Eltville am Rhein and Berlin (Germany). And of course, our loyal Rotterdam audience can also reckon on a concert in our home base De Doelen on Thursday August 30.
During the tour, celebrated pianist Yefim Bronfman will perform Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto. Symphonies by Haydn, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Zimmerman and Bruckner will also appear on the music stands. With these works, the tour will signal the end of ten years’ partnership between Yannick and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra: a unique relationship which has grown from a ‘click’ into a love story.
