Ook in seizoen 2023-2024 kunt u weer een aantal gratis lunchconcerten bezoeken.

What do you love about your instrument? The tone. Very warm and expressive.
Do you have a favourite spot in Rotterdam I love De Groene Passage. When I go to lunch at Spirit, it's really a gift for me. I love food a lot, and Spirit is the best place to eat and be calm. Also the Essenburgpark, which is very close to my home, it’s my little paradise. It's very green. I go there for walks very often. It's a small but very beautiful park. A bit like Giverny, where Claude Monet lived. It's my little Giverny.
Life as a professional musician is demanding. How do you keep yourself balanced? My favourite thing in my life is being a mother. That's very high on my list. My children give me energy, happiness, love. But I also love yoga, and I need to move, so I love swimming and I love walking. I love movies, watching movies. I love tea. I love chocolate. I love champagne, and I love my husband and my children.
What's your favourite music besides classical music? Brazilian music, samba.
What's really distinctive about the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra? Love. It's an incredibly loving orchestra, but also very alive. I don't have a lot of experience. I've only played in this orchestra, but from what I hear from other orchestras, I think this is the best place to be happy, because the people are so loving with each other. That's unique. And we play very well, and we're very professional. And we love to really play together.
Do you feel a certain connection to the audience while you're playing? Yes, especially after Covid. It was so emotional to feel the audience again. And we have a fantastic audience in Rotterdam. There is a great relationship between our audience and us musicians. Really touching. Very special. They're so kind, and you can feel that. They are with us all the way and very enthousiastic. It's fun.

How did the trombone come your way? Actually trombone was not my first choice. When I was young and I was allowed to choose an instrument, I actually wanted to play the trumpet, when I saw walking in the marching band on the street in our village. Then I started with trumpet, but when I got braces it didn't fit anymore. So basically I had to switch to a bigger mouthpiece then. And then I first played a euphonium, a kind of small tuba. But when there were not enough trombones in the marching band, the conductor asked if I wanted to play the trombone. Actually, I didn't want to at first, but my father said: 'Just try it.' In the end I really liked it. So from that time, eleven or twelve years old, that's been my instrument.
Did you already know when you were twelve that you wanted to be a musician? Maybe in the back of my mind. But then I still had the idea of music that it was not a good choice, because there was nothing to earn from it. That was said to me a lot too. That's why I thought for a long time that maybe I wasn't going to do that. When I was about fifteen or sixteen years old and I started making more and more music, people asked me that question more and more. That's how I realized that I could do a little more than average. And then gradually the doubts came. Maybe I want to do this, which was the best thing I did, going to the conservatory.
All I wanted was to just make music and preferably with people who were just as crazy as me. Well, that's what I came across at the conservatory. From that time, I sometimes say afterwards, my life really started. So everything before that was kind of the lead up to life in music.
What do you like about your instrument? That sometimes we have a moment to shine. A whole piece actually leads to our moment. Sometimes you have half an hour of music and then the best moment is when we come into action. Some colleagues are sometimes jealous of it. We sometimes joke about that, that a conductor then leaves us standing. Then we may have only played a minute, but that was the best minute of the piece. And then he leaves us standing at the applause. It is of course very sour for the people who have played a lot of notes, throughout the piece. We sometimes joke about that with each other. But that is the best thing, that our moment, when we have to play, that is sometimes the moment of the piece.

All I wanted was to just make music and preferably with people who were just as crazy as me. Well, that's what I came across at the conservatory. From that time, my (musical) life really started. 

What is so great for you about the double bass? Well, it’s the deep, low resonant notes that are best. The base lines I consider just as important as the melody lines.
Is there anything that you had to give up for your career in music? The only thing I felt like I’ve had to give up is living in a part of the world where there are amazing hiking trails and hills. And I suppose there are some orchestras in these places, but I am here in a very flat country, but I still love it.
What does your study room look like? Do you have a study room? Yes, it’s the top floor of my house. It’s got a sofa bed, a carpet and the double bass is leaning against the wardrobe. And a few music stands. Music all over the place...along with kids toys, kind of in annoying places. I keep having to push that away. 
What would you have chosen career wise if it wouldn’t have been music? I think something like a park ranger. Something to do with the wilderness.
Who or what inspirers you? Preferably names outside the classical music scene. Well, people with a mixture of talent and passion. My favourite jazz musician is Oscar Peterson. My favourite, kind of cross-over jazz/pop musician is Amy Winehouse. And I think my favourite singer, that’s more rock, is Freddie Mercury.
The best music except for classical music. Right. Let’s think. I have to go back to my student days, and it will maybe be something from Blur. Girls &amp; Boys from Blur or Stone Roses, something like that. Some English nineties Britpop stuff, that’s all good.
What is truly characteristic of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra?  I genuinely think our orchestra plays more often with a raw passion than other orchestras. The same kind of passion that I felt when I was in a youth orchestra. Many other orchestras are perhaps a little neater. Less risk taking.

How did you get into playing the clarinet? I was always drawn to the sound of the clarinet. And my parents had an LP of Mozart's clarinet concerto. I was a fan and thought to myself ‘I want to play this instrument’.
What do you love about your instrument? The colour of the sound is very special to me. And you can have many colours. Expression, soft and sometimes very brilliant too.
Is there another instrument you would like to master? I started with piano because I didn't have teeth, so I did piano for two or three years first. Then I moved to the clarinet. I have always studied both clarinet and piano. If I were to learn a new instrument, I always think of the cello. I find the cello so beautiful.
How do you study a piece of music? Good question. First, I need to know who the composer is and I need to listen to other pieces. It doesn't happen very often that we play new composers. We often know the repertoire. I have been with the orchestra for fifteen years now and it has rarely happened that I had to study a new piece. But if there is a new piece, then I try to learn the language of the piece and the composer.
Do you feel a certain connection with the audience while playing? In Rotterdam, we have a special connection with the audience. I sometimes recognize people. If I go shopping in Rotterdam between a rehearsal and a concert and I meet people, sometimes they ask: ‘Are you Hervé, the clarinet player?’ You notice that after fifteen years, you start to recognize people. It's also nice to see more of the friends of the orchestra after a while.
What makes a concert a top concert for you? I don't know, and I don't think anyone knows. It's an alchemy that happens at the moment between conductor, musicians, audience and pieces and that's magical. There is no recipe for it, fortunately.
A day without ... is a day not lived. What would you fill in the blank with? A day without Mozart is a day not lived.
