Music for Breakfast: Party Like it’s 1799
Breakfast concert on a Sunday morning.
In his younger years – before he had his wild hair and his piercing gaze – Beethoven wrote his sunniest work. Take the Serenade from 1801: party music based on a Mozartian recipe, which immediately became a huge hit. More than a century later, Jean Françaix was also inspired by the wig era. His Trio a cordes dances as if it were 1799, peppered with jazzy rhythms and blue notes. In between these two party animals, Arnold Bax provides a moment of tranquility with his sublime Elegiac Trio.
