Brahms 4 with Yannick Nézet-Séguin

A musical legacy: How Dvořák's support from Brahms led to the rise of Florence Price's sparkling violin concerto.

Do you come from a musical family? What role did music play in your family? Not a musical family, but a special one. My father had a great love for all kinds of music, especially from classical to jazz. He had a very varied record collection and one thing led to another.
Do you have a favourite record that was played at home? We have a strange record called Switched-On Bach. And that is the very first synthesizer music. On the LP cover is a man from Bach's time, with pipe curls and such things, and on the back is a whole room full of synthesizers. What now fits into one chip could not fit in the room back then. And that's quite an iconic record. And yes, it's fun.
What would you have become if you hadn't become a musician? Instrument making could have been an option, but it could just as easily have been my father's company. He had a wood trade, a sawmill. That could have been it, but life takes its turns at the right moments, so it became double bass.
When you're so involved with music, can it still touch you? Yes, you often ask yourself that question: can I still enjoy it without bias, like someone who doesn't have that professional background? I think so. You can never go back to the time when you were five years old and heard that particular piece of music for the first time, that's impossible. But there are other possibilities. Often you're still listening with a technical ear, just like a photographer looks with a technical eye, or how a bridge builder might walk over the Erasmus Bridge and think ‘nice thing, it's built like this and that.’
How would you describe Rotterdam to someone who doesn't know the city? I've been thinking about how to best describe it and I found 'getekend' (meaning drawn, as in illustrated but also marked) a very good description. Because Rotterdam is partly marked by the war (bombed in World War II) and partly by all the architects who had to redraw the city after the war and after the interbellum. They always had to find a compromise between what is beautiful and what is practical and feasible. As the city further evolves, the more it can be thought of in terms of beauty and no longer reconstruction. And that term 'getekend' has two sides to it, which, in my opinion, describes the city very good.
