Wednesday 1 June: round 4 (opera) 
The ultimate test: in this round the conductors not only work with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, but also with Laurens Symfonisch and five singers from the International Vocal Competition 's-Hertogenbosch. On the lectern is Bizet's masterpiece&nbsp;Carmen!
Friday, June 3: Round 5 (final) 
Experience the climax of the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam! At the Grande Finale, the conductors will again work with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. This time the assignment work of Joey Roukens&nbsp;Night Flight&nbsp;&nbsp;is central. In addition, parts from the Sixth Symphony by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich' Fifth Symphony and Mahler's Fourth Symphony. The prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening.

Cameron Carpenter combineert Saint-Saëns’ Orgelsymfonie met Moussa’s moderne meesterwerk en brengt als een rockster het orgel naar de 21ste eeuw.

De tragische van Mahler knalde werkelijk de concertzaal uit. Overweldigend en fantastisch!

Brahms’ requiem is geen dodenmis die de gestorvene vergezelt onderweg naar het hiernamaals, maar muziek die troost biedt aan de nabestaanden. Muziek voor de levenden dus, met een grote melodische rijkdom en emotionele intensiteit. Yannis Kyriakides noemt zijn recompositie ‘een droomlandschap met flarden van Brahms die op een wanordelijke manier opduiken en verdwijnen’.
In de voorstelling staat de muziek van Brahms voor het aardse leven; Kyriakides’ elektronische klankwereld is als een echo die toegang biedt tot een andere tijdsdimensie en parallelle werkelijkheid op het toneel – deze muziek maakt het gebruik van flashbacks en flashforwards mogelijk, die vergezeld gaan van een ander danstaal.

Anima Obscura, is een samenwerking tussen Scapino, het RPhO en Laurens Vocaal.
Anima Obscura&nbsp;is een weelderig totaalkunstwerk waarin choreografie, videoperformance, animatie, hologrammen, kostuumontwerp en livemuziek samensmelten. De digitale technologieën dagen de expressieve mogelijkheden van de dans uit en creëren samen een vernieuwende, sensuele theaterervaring.
In de voorstelling klinkt Ein Deutsches Requiem&nbsp;van Johannes Brahms, versneden met Ein Schemen&nbsp;van Yannis Kyriakides - een hedendaagse ‘re-composition’ voor koor, harp en elektronica. De muziek wordt live uitgevoerd door het&nbsp;Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest, Laurens Symfonisch&nbsp;(koor), harpist Remy van Kesteren en solisten Aphrodite Patulidou (sopraan) en James Atkinson (bariton).

St Matthew Passion

Also this season, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra returns to tell the Easter story through one of the greatest classical works of all time: the St Matthew Passion, also known as Matthäus-Passion, by Johannes Sebastian Bach. The St Matthew Passion was first performed on Good Friday in 1727 and became an important tradition during Easter. This religious celebration of Easter is a true dichotomy between death and life, end and beginning, sorrow and joy.
<h3>The birth of tradition</h3>
A powerful 3-hour masterpiece tells the story of the last days of Christ's life, performed by solo voices, a double orchestra, and a double choir. This special music leaves no one indifferent. Feelings of love, loss and togetherness are important themes.
&nbsp;In 1870 the St Matthew Passion made its debut in Rotterdam. Due to the great interest in this piece, more performances followed throughout the country. Eventually, the St Matthew Passion on Good Friday became an annual tradition. Even now, after more than 150 years, the St. Matthew Passion is well attended. Everyone knows this masterpiece, regardless of interest in classical music. The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra is happy to continue this longstanding tradition.&nbsp;
<h3>A story behind the piece</h3>
Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the St Matthew Passion during his long tenure as conductor of church music and cantor of the school at Thomaskirch in Leipzig. This late baroque oratorio aimed to present the passion story in music during the vespers services on Good Friday. After its great success, this piece was performed several times during the composer's lifetime. Originally, Bach composed five passions, but only music for St. John and St. Matthew has survived to this day. Don't miss the chance to experience the best of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra's Matthäus-Passion tradition!

Bach specialist John Butt takes the listener on a journey through time to the Leipzig of 1727.
