Chef-dirigent van het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest

Lahav Shani is chef-dirigent van het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest. Hij trad aan in september 2018, als opvolger van Yannick Nézet-Séguin, en werd daarmee de jongste chef-dirigent in de honderdjarige geschiedenis van het orkest. In seizoen 2020–21 volgde hij Zubin Mehta op als Music Director van het Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

In seizoen 2017–18 werd Lahav Shani vaste gastdirigent van de Wiener Symphoniker, waar hij sinds zijn debuut in 2015 al verschillende malen te gast was geweest – onder meer in de grote Europatournee van januari 2016. Shani werkt ook veel samen met de Staatskapelle Berlin, zowel in de Berliner Staatsoper als in symfonische concerten.

Recente en aankomende hoogtepunten in zijn concertagenda als gastdirigent omvatten optredens met de Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, het Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, het London Symphony Orchestra, het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, de Staatskapelle Dresden, het Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, het Budapest Festival Orchestra, de Boston Symphony, het Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, het Philharmonia Orchestra, het Orchestre de Paris, het Philadelphia Orchestra, de Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, de Bamberger Symphoniker en het Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Lahav Shani (Tel Aviv, 1989) begon zijn op zesjarige leeftijd zijn pianostudie bij Hannah Shalgi en kreeg daarna les van Arie Vardi aan de Buchmann-Mehta Muziekschool in zijn geboortestad. Hij voltooide zijn pianostudie bij Fabio Bidini aan de Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’ te Berlijn; aan hetzelfde instituut studeerde hij orkestdirectie bij Christian Ehwald. Tijdens zijn studiejaren was Daniel Barenboim zijn mentor. Lahav Shani maakte zijn doorbraak als dirigent toen hij in 2013 het internationale Gustav Mahler dirigentenconcours te Bamberg won. In juni 2016 debuteerde Lahav Shani bij het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest als dirigent en pianosolist; twee maanden later volgde de aankondiging van zijn benoeming tot chef-dirigent met ingang van 2018.

Als pianist speelde Lahav Shani zijn eerste solorecital in de Berlijnse Boulezzaal, juli 2018. Bij veel orkesten dirigeerde hij al pianoconcerten van achter het klavier, onder meer bij het Philharmonia Orchestra, de Staatskapelle Berlin en het Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Lahav Shani heeft ook een flinke staat van dienst als pianist in kamermuziek, met optredens in onder meer het Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, de Kölner Philharmonie en het Verbier Festival. In 2019 verscheen bij Warner een cd met pianotrio’s van Tsjaikovski en Dvořák die Shani samen met Renaud Capuçon en Kian Soltani opnam.

Chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra

Lahav Shani is chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He assumed his position in September 2018, succeeding Yannick Nézet-Séguin and becoming the youngest Chief Conductor in the orchestra’s history.

In the 2020/21 season, Shani succeeded Zubin Mehta as Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2017/18 season, Shani became Principal Guest Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, following a number of appearances with the orchestra since his debut in May 2015, including a major European tour in January 2016. He also works regularly with the Berlin Staatskapelle, both at the Berlin Staatsoper and also for symphonic concerts.

Recent and upcoming highlights as a guest conductor include engagements with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Vienna Philharmonic, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Boston Symphony, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Bamberger Symphoniker and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Shani was born in Tel Aviv in 1989 and started his piano studies aged six with Hannah Shalgi, continuing with Prof. Arie Vardi at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv. He went on to complete his studies in conducting with Prof. Christian Ehwald and piano with Prof. Fabio Bidini, both at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin. Whilst a student he was mentored by Daniel Barenboim. In 2013 he won First Prize in the Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition in Bamberg. June 2016 saw Lahav Shani’s debut with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra as a conductor and as a piano soloist; his appointment as Chief Conductor from 2018 was announced two months later.

As a pianist Shani made his solo recital debut at the Boulez Saal in Berlin in July 2018. He has play- directed piano concerti with many orchestras including the Philharmonia Orchestra, Staatskapelle Berlin, and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Shani also has considerable experience performing chamber music appearing at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Cologne Philharmonie and the Verbier Festival. In 2019, Warner released a CD with piano trios by Tchaikovsky and Dvořák which Shani recorded together with Renaud Capuçon and Kian Soltani.
